As the public recognizes the importance of
healthy, comfortable, and productive indoor environments, their awareness and
demand for good indoor air quality (IAQ) increases. This demand has resulted
in IAQ emerging as a major concern in office buildings. Many office buildings
have significant indoor air pollution sources. Factors contributing to indoor
air pollution include the location of air intake; building design; building
materials and furnishings; and indoor activities. The commonest cause of poor indoor air
include the presence of indoor air pollutant, improper designed and poor
maintenance or operation of air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation
system People generally have less control over the
indoor environment in their offices than they do in their homes. As a result,
there are large numbers of reported health problems associated with office
buildings What Is IAQ IAQ is defined in terms of freshness and
cleanliness of the air for the indoor occupants. ASHRAE has defined
acceptable IAQ as “air in which there are no known contamination at
harmful concentrations as determined by cognizant authorities and with which
a substantial majority (80% or more) of the people exposed do not express
dissatisfaction”. The
World Health Organisation (WHO) has used a broader definition “the
physical and chemical nature of indoor air, as delivered to the breathing
zone of building occupants, which produces a complete state of mental,
physical and social well-being of the occupants, and not merely the absence
of disease or infirmity”. Standard Reference Legislation: - None Regulation: - None Guideline: - Malaysia – Code of Practice on Indoor Air Quality (2005) - ASHRAE (Standard 62-89), Ventilation for acceptable Indoor Air Quality IAQ Guidelines: Malaysia DOSH and ASHRAE
